Idea: Halting knife attacks on students in China

RH:
1. The horrific ongoing spate of knife attacks on school students in China, even kindergarten kids, resulting in many deaths and serious hurt, require long and short term solutions.

2. Since the reasons for the knifings of innocent children are mostly social inequalities and social injustices, long term solutions must address these. Measures can include more social workers; more social work; telephone helplines -- publish these widely -- manned by trained social workers and even psychologists; free food vouchers given out by govt offices as well as philantropic orgs; employment agencies to help the desperate and needy find work, even temp and contract work; free counselling by trained counsellors; doctors, nurses and police alerted to signs of troubled minds and who can recommend assessments for mental health care or counselling by social workers; in other words, all the social work methods. Publicise all these services widely so that the desperate know there is hope and help.

3. All these take time. In the meantime, these knifings must be stopped immediately. Fortunately, China is a Confucian society in which families are strong and caring, so a Confucian solution is possible. The solution is for the families of the victims to sue the families of the killers. At first glance, it may seem to violate the principles of law and justice. However, we are balancing the 'rights' of the defendant families against the 'rights' of the victim families not to suffer deaths and serious injuries. It is an easy decision. While the families of the killers technically, should not be responsible for the killings, in a Confucian society, all members of a family have a duty of care to each other, just like a pet dog owner has a duty of care to not let his dog bite innocent people.

4. If we can argue that in a Confucian society, all members of a family do owe a duty of care to each other, then the lawsuit and the judges will rule for this duty of care each member of a family owes to the others. For example, if a family member becomes violent or is bent on murder, even if mentally ill, do you not have a duty to stop him? Thus, the law, lawyers and judges will find for such arguments. I don't think the China Govt needs to tell judges what verdicts they should give. All that the China Govt needs to do is to provide free lawyers to the victims families to sue the killers families, and publicise this service widely. Simply knowing that their families will be sued will be enough to deter would-be attackers.

5. When such lawsuits are publicised widely, the knifings will stop.
