Politicians do nothing except play politics to stay in power. That is all they do and they do it very well, which is why many Singaporeans think they are indispensable.
Vote them out and give our citystate the first real opportunity for change in 50 years.
Then and only then will HDB prices come down to sane levels, NS reduced to 6 months to a year, our CPF accounts start getting real interest and grow big enough for our old age and medical needs, education more creative instead of rote-learning, the huge influx of foreigners slowed, the free scholarships to foreigners depriving our children of places in tertiary institutions -- in short, all the good things that the current 21 politicians refuse to even consider let alone bother to change.
Hongkong never had a LIE KY nor our 21 politicians and look at them! What HK can do we can, too, once these 21 politicians are kicked out.
It is time to vote them out, like so many countries are voting out long-ruling parties.

Write simple English for computer translations

1. Having commuted by bus most of my younger life, then also by metro trains when these were built, and lastly driving my wife's car in recent years, I have most of the usual experiences of a pedestrian and a driver.
2. As a pedestrian, I appreciate the pedestrian-push-button-controlled Traffic Light Controlled Pedestrian Crossings. As a driver, I am annoyed when I have to stop at one of these when there's nobody crossing; or when someone crosses in just a few seconds but I have to wait out the entire Red Light, until it turns Green.
3. In the video above, I have captured a scene when nobody's crossing at the Traffic Light Controlled Pedestrian Crossing just below my flat. I spent only half an hour and got several examples of which this is the best -- or worst. When vehicles waited out the entire ~20sec or so but nobody was crossing. It seems to me that this is stupid. Surely, there must be a better way? Here is one attempt.
4. Paramount is safety of the pedestrians. It is easy to make a rule overnight, to let vehicles stopped at a Traffic Light Controlled Pedestrian Crossing, to drive on when nobody's crossing, or when all the pedestrians have already crossed -- even if the traffic light still remains red. But this could be dangerous.
5. Suppose we do just that: change the rule so that vehicles can drive on through the red light if they see that nobody's crossing or everybody has crossed safely. After all, there are precedents: at Bukit Batok West Ave 3 is a LEFT TURN ON RED sign at the T-junction that allows vehicles to turn left even when the traffic light shows red. However, this is not dangerous because this driving through a red light is only for vehicles approching from the long end of the T and only for the Left Turn [cannot drive through the horizontal bar of the T, so vehicles have to slow for the turn anyway, so quite safe to turn left after having checked that no vehicles are approaching from the right]. A pedestrian crossing like the one discussed is along a straight road, so approach speeds of vehicles will be much higher than slowing for a Left Turn On Red junction. This means that if the rule is changed to allow vehicles to drive on through the red light, drivers will tend not to stop and drive through fast. Besides being dangerous to allow drivers the habit to drive through red lights, there could be situations when a pedestrian may somehow not be seen by the approaching driver and he/she steps onto the crossing when the driver, not seeing the pedestrian, speeds through without stopping. Fatal accidents can happen. This is very possible since the pedestrian will have seen the Green Walking Man light up for him to cross, so may not check for oncoming traffic, while the driver, also thinking he has the right to drive on through the red light, may not see the pedestrian, with tragic results.
6. One way is to retain the injunction to stop at Red Lights. This will avoid drivers developing a bad habit of driving [legally] through red lights. However, we still need to let drivers who have already stopped at the Traffic Light Controlled Pedestrian Crossing to drive on when nobody's crossing or everybody has crossed safely, otherwise the stupid scenario in my video will continue to happen. We can do this by letting drivers drive on when the Red Light begins FLASHING, indicating "Proceed if safe" mode. It is easy to change a circuit board controller to make the red light come on as usual, then after, say, 3 sec, start flashing. This red light of 3 sec followed by the usual length of 'crossing time' [~20sec in my video] will force vehicles to stop on seeing the red or flashing red light, but after the 3sec or so, may drive on when the Flashing Red Light begins, provided of course, nobody is crossing or everybody has crossed safely.
7. All that remains is to ensure that all vehicles MUST stop on seeing the Red Light or Flashing Red light at the Traffic Light Controlled Pedestrian Crossing. After vehicles have stopped, they may drive on DURING THE FLASHING RED ONLY [about 3sec after the Red Light] provided it is safe to do so. This will require mass media announcements, immediate inclusion of this new feature in all the Traffic Rules books or Highway Code books, questions in Highway Code written and oral tests, websites, letters to all driving licence holders, posters at all car showrooms and bus interchanges, etc. If the success of the Left Turn On Red signs are indicative, this new sign should be equally successful. I have encountered now and then, at the Left Turn On Red sign at Bukit Batok West Ave 3, some vehicles which stopped, not knowing they could turn Left on red, but some honking from behind quickly educated them. Make the new signs big and readable from afar as part of the education process. There should be no major problems.
8. This new system not only conveniences drivers and results in higher average speeds throughout the islet, but by so doing, allow even more such Traffic Light Controlled Pedestrian Crossings to be set up thus conveniencing pedestrians as well. Thus, pedestrians will also gain from this new system. So, win-win for all. Proposed sign: "STOP FIRST on Red or Flashing Red, then drive on if nobody's crossing." Happy Chinese New Year.

Stupidest govt of all time
RH:
1. Foreigners have known for a long time that Singapore PR is the most profitable in the world. Since in almost all human affairs, what is profitable for one group is invariable at the expense of another/others, this phenomenon totally screws us local Singaporeans, as in all zero sum games.
2. This phenomenon did not arise by chance, since EVERYTHING is controlled in Singapore. Not that what I am about to explain has been thought out by LIE KY 2A1B WKS MBT or any of the other crony Ministers. They are simply too stupid and incompetent for such elegant logic and arguments, obvious though these are once explained. Theirs has been 50 years of "big doses of incompetent govt", and then some.
3. For example, they have been raising the prices of HDB and private housing all along, as all monopolies are wont to do. But the extremes of such deliberate, planned and controlled price increases were after the announcement of the so-called ha3 "asset enhancement scheme", which is simply deliberate huge increases in HDB flat prices year after year after year, resulting in the recent Temasek Review news reports on S$990,000 and S$999,000 asking prices for old, 5-room HDB flats [many years lived in], into their 99-year leases.
4. This asset enhancement scheme of yearly, huge price increases led to an almost perfect predictability of housing prices, never smart for any economy nor possible since all other economies allow free competition and supply & demand forces to affect prices whereas our LIEgime totally controls every aspect of our economy, esp housing prices. Plus, they never thought to restrict speculation or discourage flipping of houses, mostly because the Ministers and the elite classes are heavily involved in these very profitable ventures. LIE KY LHL LWL and their many relatives were, for example, corruptly buying luxury condos from HPL at illegal discounts for speculation profits, since they all have many houses, so not for living in. "For investment" explains LIE KY, meaning for speculation profits. Buy low, sell high, in other words. So, without discouragement of speculation, HDB and private property became a sure way to increase wealth, on paper, at least, since the LIEgime controlled prices so well these kept rising, and very rapidly. Their main method is to restrict supply of HDB flats and sale of govt land for condos. So much so that in 2008, they built only 3,183 HDB flats while accepting 90,000 new PRs and 20,000 new citizens, not to mention our local couples who need homes to build families. Prices soared and soared to the ~S$1m for HDB 5-rooms.
5. Most foreigners know this because a flat is THE main consideration when they come to Singapore. Once they cotton on to the fact that HDB and private property prices ALWAYS rise, as even in last year's 2009 recession, then the obvious thing is to buy a flat as quickly as possible. For most foreigners, this means applying for PR quick. So, since the LIEgime saw each PR application as a kind of endorsement of their LIEgime and is flattered, they oblige as quickly [the truth is simpler -- it's just to make a killing]. This explains why there are far more applications for PR than citizenship. You can always give up your PR and return home AND SELL YOUR FLAT FOR A HUGE PROFIT which you cannot once you give up your foreign citizenship. Some do apply for citizenship for the benefits, but like Temasek Review pointed out, a foreign couple always keeps 1 of the couple's original, foreign, citizenship so they enjoy the best of both worlds, and can always return home, selling their flat for a huge profit. Again, the LIEgime is flattered that some foreigners apply for citizenship and goes into a tizzy at this 'endorsement' of their govt and policies, when the truth is simply to make a killing.
6. With the most pro-foreigner policies in the world [and by zero sum game the most anti-citizen policies in the world], the foreigner never had it this good anywhere in the world. He is given all the help, from free scholarships to study in our universities thus depriving our citizens of places -- many foreign students are actually brought in from even younger, into secondary schools; to finding jobs, to applying for PR, often granted in a few months with few questions asked, in prob the highest 'success rate' and fewest rejections, in the world.
7. Since PR allows the purchase of HDB flats, almost all foreigners apply, which flatters the LIEgime, which considers this an endorsement of their LIEgime. But every PR or half-spouse-citizen finds that even as the lure of huge profits from flipping property make it imperative to apply for PR, they cannot realise their profit as long as they stay here, so there is a countervailing imperative to leave, and sell their flat to take profit. This explains the high rate of 'quitters' who, after tiring of this tiny islet of 700 sq km [about 230 sq miles], and all its suffocating culture and infreedoms, leave for greener pastures or even their original homelands.
8. Thus, this story of the foreigner is one of huge profits while we citizens, who cannot easily uproot and quit, have no such profits to make since we cannot sell our flat without having to buy another, at even more ridiculous prices, now soon to breach S$1m for what's left of an old HDB 99-year lease. Worse, because the prices are constantly and rapidly rising, new couples wanting to get married and set up home have to compete with deliberate govt under-supply of flats, foreigners who are willing to pay any price knowing that in just a few years, they will not only recoup their purchase price but make a killing as well, we citizens are well and truly screwed.
9. Can there ever be a bigger "dose of incompetent govt", a govt as stupid as ours, in the entire history of govt? I rest my case.

Footnote 13 Feb 10: RH: That the LIEgime built only 3,183 flats in 2008 is totally incomprehensible. That this 3,183 is only a tiny fraction of what is needed can be predicted as early as 1986 -- when 38,379 babies were born. They would now be ~24 years old, coupling into ~19,000 couples so needing ~19,000 flats [actual 2008 marriages = 24,596, close to what could have been predicted from the 1980s. Not that 1986 was special -- other than my son's birth -- the ~40,000 babies is a longtime constant so doesnt take a Great Forecaster to see]. Add in the insane 90,000 new PRs in 2008 and another 20,000 new citizens and you have the STUPIDEST GOVT OF ALL TIME!!! Note: I have not factored in deaths because deaths do not add much to the supply of flats every year. 1. On Sat 19 Mar 2011, just before the General Election on 7 May 2011, LIE KY made the mind-bogglingly 'stupid and incompetent' promise that "85% [actually 82%] of Singaporeans are living in HDB [public housing] flats and we intend to keep the values of these homes up. IT WILL NEVER GO DOWN."
2. That this is impossible is obvious upon a few seconds' thinking. For example, since all HDB flats are leasehold for 99 years, obviously if your flat has only, say, 10 years, or 20 years, or 30 years of lease left, you can never sell it for a higher price than you bought it. Obviously. In fact, the general experience and understanding is that HDB flats over 30 years are unsellable, let alone fetch a price higher than the owner paid for it.
3. Yet LIE KY was not just being his typical 'stupid and incompetent' self. He was merely proclaiming a fundamental policy that is:
a. the centrepiece and key to all his economic policies
b. key to his amassing huge 'reserves', which are actually just a loan-transfer from the CPF, which itself is merely a temporary repository of the CPF members' compulsory [about 36% of every paycheque] savings, allowed for paying HDB mortgages, hence most people are yet to begin fighting against this expropriation of their paycheques, nor do they realise it IS expropriation
c. this huge 'reserves' other half being made up of ever-increasing [and ridiculously overpriced, BY MANY MULTIPLES] prices of HDB public housing flats sold to citizens and PRs at unbelievably humongous, profiteering and rapacious profits
4. Thus, to repeat this important para 3, LIE KY central economic policy is huge reserves made up of borrowing the entire CPF treasure chest for him to use as he wants [mostly to buy a huge red-carpet welcome from other countries and foreign companies greedy for his 'investments'] + further building up huge reserves by charging ridiculous prices for his tiny public housing HDB flats. With this much monies, he also uses it to choose winners and losers in luring sexy 'industries' [usually just a half dozen factories] that he thinks make him Look Good, such as 'high techs', etc. He also spends some money on other Look Goods, such as a clean and modern city. Thus, overpriced public housing is central to ALL his economic policies. Understand this and you understand how Singapore economy works and once you understand this, you also understand how Singapore politics works and from this, how every branch of Singapore Govt works, from education to labour to the huge influx of foreign workers. LEEism is exceeding simple and utterly Stupid and Incompetent.
5. Thus, so central is Overpriced and Ever-Rising HDB public housing prices that it is the Most Important Single Policy in LEEism. This explains LIE KY promise on 19 Mar 2011. Although Minister for National Development [HDB] MAH Bow Tan was sacked after the election, he was just the scapegoat, as is usual. His policy of deliberate and massive undersupply of HDB flats was not his alone. It is the longtime and continuing LEEism from LIE KY himself and implemented [the entire Cabinet and govt down are all just Implementors without a single Originator or Thinker, which honour and right is reserved for LIE KY alone]. LIE KY is responsible for EVERYTHING, including the massive undersupply of HDB public housing flats.
6. Like every economic policy, a single major policy can distort the entire economy, like in this case of deliberate overpricing of HDB public housing flats. Housing is always a major component of every economy and exaggeratedly so in a tiny city and tiny economy like Singapore. Given that the almighty, omnipresent and omniscient govt can control every single behaviour and policy in this tiny, over-governed city, and the Major Policy is to keep increasing HDB public housing prices, this necessitates deliberate undersupply of HDB flats, and simultaneously also ramping up demand with an influx of foreigners, while maintaining an absolute monopoly in housing 82% of the entire population, all in order to keep prices ever higher and higher and higher. Leading to the unbelievably ridiculous [see my Footnote of 13 Feb 2010 above].
7. With LIE KY leading the charge, and abetted by his crony Ministers, the Singapore Govt also expertly [as always] 'managed perceptions' of the people, through heavy papaganda by all his controlled medias as well as every organ of influence. Thus, Singaporeans, who in the best of times, are the most stupid people on earth, bred and made that way for easier control and management, discouraged from criticising the govt and therefore all critical thinking, believed in certain fallacies:
a. that HDB flats prices can and will keep rising as promised by LIE KY and his entire govt for decades, promoted by all the state medias who also absent any information that may contradict such beliefs
b. that this is actual fact, that HDB prices keep rising, never mind that released selling prices represent ONLY SUCCESSFUL SALES while the vast majority of flats are either unsellable, cannot fetch high prices, or that owners cannot sell because they would have to pay even higher prices for their new replacement flat. For example, in 2010, only 32, 257 HDB flats were sold as Resale Flats while there were 1,007,229 HDB flats built altogether by 2010, giving 3.2%. Even if this ~3% successful HDB Resales fetched humongous profits over and above their original prices, it is stupid and incompetent of the govt and people to believe that this experience of the 3% represents a Reality for all 100% of HDB dwellers. But, thanks to relentless papaganda, the absence of critical thinking and even information, this is the prevailing reality. Singapore and the LIEgime are Myths and Illusions, cleverly and relentlessly papagated and usually believed
c. a further distortion is the necessity to deliberately keep supply of HDB flats vastly below demand [see example in my above Footnote 13 Feb 2010]. This started off as simply monopoly greed, then became an economic mainstay and imperative because hugely profitable, then ballooned into a critical election decider and barometer of the peoples' fury, that went unrecognised and censored, silenced as only a tyrant LIEgime can effect, with the result that General Election May 2011 saw the LIEgime vote drop 6% to 60.14%, the lowest since independence. However, the LIEgime has repeatedly cheated in elections and no figures or results should be believed as genuine. Everything is 'managed' and manipulated
d. thus, LIE KY promise to "never" let HDB flats prices "go down" is simply a political and economic imperative. As long as HDB prices of new flats keep rising inexorably and the 3% of Resale HDB flats prices seem high and 'profitable', buyers are content enough to keep paying ever-higher prices. After all, firstly, prices keep rising so nothing can be done about it except book a flat as soon as the couple becomes eligible. Secondly, as long as the 3% can keep selling at very high prices Resale, there is the hope that maybe, one day, if you do get to sell, you may make a handsome profit. In the meantime, there is the comforting belief that you own an appreciating asset, that is worth much more than you paid, if you ever need to sell. This, then, is the Psychology of HDB Owners. Like all irrational beliefs, it cannot stand up to a moment's logic but logic is never strong among sheep or "sheeple" as termed online. Keeping people stupid is key to stability and stability is good for the LIEgime because with stability, nothing changes and if nothing changes, then the LIE Dynasty rules forever. Hence Stability is the key virtue for dynasties.
8. I have spent time and thought on HDB. It is important because it is THE central plank of LIE KY economic and therefore also, political strategy. Understand HDB and you understand much of LIE KY stupidity and incompetence and why Singapore is all just Bubbles and like all bubbles, will burst and collapse.

This explains the high rate of 'quitters' who, after tiring of this tiny islet of 700 sq km [about 230 sq miles], and all its suffocating culture and infreedoms, leave for greener pastures or even their original homelands.
8. Thus, this story of the foreigner is one of huge profits while we citizens, who cannot easily uproot and quit, have no such profits to make since we cannot sell our flat without having to buy another, at even more ridiculous prices, now soon to breach S$1m for what's left of an old HDB 99-year lease. Worse, because the prices are constantly and rapidly rising, new couples wanting to get married and set up home have to compete with deliberate govt under-supply of flats, foreigners who are willing to pay any price knowing that in just a few years, they will not only recoup their purchase price but make a killing as well, we citizens are well and truly screwed.
9. Can there ever be a bigger "dose of incompetent govt", a govt as stupid as ours, in the entire history of govt? I rest my case.

Footnote 13 Feb 10: RH: That the LIEgime built only 3,183 flats in 2008 is totally incomprehensible. That this 3,183 is only a tiny fraction of what is needed can be predicted as early as 1986 -- when 38,379 babies were born. They would now be ~24 years old, coupling into ~19,000 couples so needing ~19,000 flats [actual 2008 marriages = 24,596, close to what could have been predicted from the 1980s. 1. On Sat 19 Mar 2011, just before the General Election on 7 May 2011, LIE KY made the mind-bogglingly 'stupid and incompetent' promise that "85% [actually 82%] of Singaporeans are living in HDB [public housing] flats and we intend to keep the values of these homes up. IT WILL NEVER GO DOWN."
2. That this is impossible is obvious upon a few seconds' thinking. For example, since all HDB flats are leasehold for 99 years, obviously if your flat has only, say, 10 years, or 20 years, or 30 years of lease left, you can never sell it for a higher price than you bought it. Obviously. In fact, the general experience and understanding is that HDB flats over 30 years are unsellable, let alone fetch a price higher than the owner paid for it.
3. Yet LIE KY was not just being his typical 'stupid and incompetent' self. He was merely proclaiming a fundamental policy that is:
a. the centrepiece and key to all his economic policies
b. key to his amassing huge 'reserves', which are actually just a loan-transfer from the CPF, which itself is merely a temporary repository of the CPF members' compulsory [about 36% of every paycheque] savings, allowed for paying HDB mortgages, hence most people are yet to begin fighting against this expropriation of their paycheques, nor do they realise it IS expropriation
c. this huge 'reserves' other half being made up of ever-increasing [and ridiculously overpriced, BY MANY MULTIPLES] prices of HDB public housing flats sold to citizens and PRs at unbelievably humongous, profiteering and rapacious profits
4. Thus, to repeat this important para 3, LIE KY central economic policy is huge reserves made up of borrowing the entire CPF treasure chest for him to use as he wants [mostly to buy a huge red-carpet welcome from other countries and foreign companies greedy for his 'investments'] + further building up huge reserves by charging ridiculous prices for his tiny public housing HDB flats. With this much monies, he also uses it to choose winners and losers in luring sexy 'industries' [usually just a half dozen factories] that he thinks make him Look Good, such as 'high techs', etc. He also spends some money on other Look Goods, such as a clean and modern city. Thus, overpriced public housing is central to ALL his economic policies. Understand this and you understand how Singapore economy works and once you understand this, you also understand how Singapore politics works and from this, how every branch of Singapore Govt works, from education to labour to the huge influx of foreign workers. LEEism is exceeding simple and utterly Stupid and Incompetent.
5. Thus, so central is Overpriced and Ever-Rising HDB public housing prices that it is the Most Important Single Policy in LEEism. This explains LIE KY promise on 19 Mar 2011. Although Minister for National Development [HDB] MAH Bow Tan was sacked after the election, he was just the scapegoat, as is usual. His policy of deliberate and massive undersupply of HDB flats was not his alone. It is the longtime and continuing LEEism from LIE KY himself and implemented [the entire Cabinet and govt down are all just Implementors without a single Originator or Thinker, which honour and right is reserved for LIE KY alone]. LIE KY is responsible for EVERYTHING, including the massive undersupply of HDB public housing flats.
6. Like every economic policy, a single major policy can distort the entire economy, like in this case of deliberate overpricing of HDB public housing flats. Housing is always a major component of every economy and exaggeratedly so in a tiny city and tiny economy like Singapore. Given that the almighty, omnipresent and omniscient govt can control every single behaviour and policy in this tiny, over-governed city, and the Major Policy is to keep increasing HDB public housing prices, this necessitates deliberate undersupply of HDB flats, and simultaneously also ramping up demand with an influx of foreigners, while maintaining an absolute monopoly in housing 82% of the entire population, all in order to keep prices ever higher and higher and higher. Leading to the unbelievably ridiculous [see my Footnote of 13 Feb 2010 above].
7. With LIE KY leading the charge, and abetted by his crony Ministers, the Singapore Govt also expertly [as always] 'managed perceptions' of the people, through heavy papaganda by all his controlled medias as well as every organ of influence. Thus, Singaporeans, who in the best of times, are the most stupid people on earth, bred and made that way for easier control and management, discouraged from criticising the govt and therefore all critical thinking, believed in certain fallacies:
a. that HDB flats prices can and will keep rising as promised by LIE KY and his entire govt for decades, promoted by all the state medias who also absent any information that may contradict such beliefs
b. that this is actual fact, that HDB prices keep rising, never mind that released selling prices represent ONLY SUCCESSFUL SALES while the vast majority of flats are either unsellable, cannot fetch high prices, or that owners cannot sell because they would have to pay even higher prices for their new replacement flat. For example, in 2010, only 32, 257 HDB flats were sold as Resale Flats while there were 1,007,229 HDB flats built altogether by 2010, giving 3.2%. Even if this ~3% successful HDB Resales fetched humongous profits over and above their original prices, it is stupid and incompetent of the govt and people to believe that this experience of the 3% represents a Reality for all 100% of HDB dwellers. But, thanks to relentless papaganda, the absence of critical thinking and even information, this is the prevailing reality. Singapore and the LIEgime are Myths and Illusions, cleverly and relentlessly papagated and usually believed
c. a further distortion is the necessity to deliberately keep supply of HDB flats vastly below demand [see example in my above Footnote 13 Feb 2010]. This started off as simply monopoly greed, then became an economic mainstay and imperative because hugely profitable, then ballooned into a critical election decider and barometer of the peoples' fury, that went unrecognised and censored, silenced as only a tyrant LIEgime can effect, with the result that General Election May 2011 saw the LIEgime vote drop 6% to 60.14%, the lowest since independence. However, the LIEgime has repeatedly cheated in elections and no figures or results should be believed as genuine. Everything is 'managed' and manipulated
d. thus, LIE KY promise to "never" let HDB flats prices "go down" is simply a political and economic imperative. As long as HDB prices of new flats keep rising inexorably and the 3% of Resale HDB flats prices seem high and 'profitable', buyers are content enough to keep paying ever-higher prices. After all, firstly, prices keep rising so nothing can be done about it except book a flat as soon as the couple becomes eligible. Secondly, as long as the 3% can keep selling at very high prices Resale, there is the hope that maybe, one day, if you do get to sell, you may make a handsome profit. In the meantime, there is the comforting belief that you own an appreciating asset, that is worth much more than you paid, if you ever need to sell. This, then, is the Psychology of HDB Owners. Like all irrational beliefs, it cannot stand up to a moment's logic but logic is never strong among sheep or "sheeple" as termed online. Keeping people stupid is key to stability and stability is good for the LIEgime because with stability, nothing changes and if nothing changes, then the LIE Dynasty rules forever. Hence Stability is the key virtue for dynasties.
8. I have spent time and thought on HDB. It is important because it is THE central plank of LIE KY economic and therefore also, political strategy. Understand HDB and you understand much of LIE KY stupidity and incompetence and why Singapore is all just Bubbles and like all bubbles, will burst and collapse.

Idea: equis to transform world
UN TO PRODUCE BULLION COINS AS WORLD CURRENCY
The announcement by the United Nationsthis week that it will license the minting of silver and gold bullion coins bearing the UN logo may be the button that launches metal prices into orbit.
In its wide-ranging report this fall, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) stated that the system of currencies and international banking practices within today’s economies were inadequate, and responsible for the present economic crisis. The report advocates that the present monetary system, wherein the dollar acts as the global reserve currency be re-examined “with urgency”.
The UNCTAD Report was the first time a major multinational institution had forwarded such a suggestion or measure, although a number of countries, including Russia and Brazil have supported replacing the dollar as the world's reserve currency. China's central bank chief Zhou Xiaochuan has mentioned that the dollar could become a basket of currencies instead.
The UN commission dismissed such a widening, saying a multiple-country system "may be equally unstable, and not transparent."
The panel is seeking more monetary balance for developing countries, and a means for them to retain their reserves and domestic savings independent of foreign agencies and arrangements.
Panel Chair US economist Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel economics laureate, has made plain that there was "a growing consensus that there are problems with the dollar reserve system. Developing countries are lending the United States trillions dollars at almost zero interest rates when they have huge needs themselves," Stiglitz stated.
"It's indicative of the nature of the problem. It's a net transfer, in a sense, to the United States, a form of foreign aid."
A report contributor, Detlef Koffe, concluded that "Replacing the dollar with a bullion currency would solve some of the problems related to the potential of countries running large deficits and would help stability,"
US Fed spokesperson Patrick Paulsen acknowledged that there could be some strong reaction in the US to the global currency, and that it would “…be viewed as a step toward a New World Order. But those same people have probably lost patience with the money-changers as well.”
He clarified that he would “…nonetheless anticipate that the western currencies will continue to depreciate, given Asia’s ascendancy in trade and manufacturing, to find their own value and enable their economies to compete. This is a UN perogrative we cannot and should not control, it’s returning to what we had with Bretton-Woods.”
The UN decided to provide a “public option” savings currency, whereby currency mints will be licensed to mint two kinds of bullion coins the size of the 1€ coin - the Uno (silver ~$5) and the Oro (gold, ~$500). The names were adopted from the book “The Humanist”, which foresees the UN being better funded by 2015 via its licensing fees, expected to be 10-15%.
The coins have a marker chemical in them that enables their authentication and processing by modified retail ATM and exchange machines in Europe, which will be distributed globally. Any licensee, public or private, can produce such bullion coinage under contract. The United Nations is doing no more than what most countries do already, except that the value of its coins will reflect their bullion weight.
Armand Dufour of the European Bank welcomes their introduction. “People have enough Fiat currency options, government and banks cannot intrude on bullion coins – they will have their own inviolable value.”
He does have one concern, however. “If we see a dismounting from the US dollar, as is inevitable in the main view, there will be a strong move to the Oro, which may drive its price up to the point where governments will not allow its circulation; they will try to isolate it.”
“That’s when the fun begins.” he said.

2. This is a brilliant idea and so timely at this stage in history that it will surely work, but I think there are some reservations.
3. For example, the intention of the UN seems to displace the US$ and all other current major reserve currencies with the Uno [silver ~US$5] and the Oro [gold ~US$500] which will happen inevitably as only 18% of those surveyed recently believe the US$ will still be the main reserve currency by 2025.
4. Having the silver and gold metals in the coins themselves make them intrinsically valuable but I believe that THERE IS NOT ENOUGH METALS FOR THE WORLD's NEEDS FOR A MAJOR RESERVE CURRENCY. I believe that there is now far more US$ held by central banks, companies and individuals -- which proves it serves a reserve, banking, financial and trading needs -- that nothing else exists at the moment to even come close.
5. One solution may be to create a semi-fiat, semi-bullion Uno and Oro. In other words, simply have the Uno and Oro be nominally worth several times more than their metals contents. The Uno has about ~US$5 worth of silver. Why not give it a face value of say, ~US$20? About 4 times more than its silver content? And the Oro, say, ~US$2,000? This way, the UN will issue enough fiat money to fund itself and all its agencies most of whom are doing God's work in eradicating hunger, poverty, disease, and improve education, help for the disadvantaged and handicapped, etc, all God's works. If the UN is rich enough from this semi-fiat, semi-bullion currency, it can even begin to solve planetary problems that no single nation or group of nations even want to fund, such as global warming, pollution, destruction of forests and habitats, endangered species, clean water, ecological and natural disasters, etc and etc.
6. Of course, as a semi-fiat currency, the Uno and Oro can be any [reasonable] value the UN chooses and I have suggested 4x value of the metal contents. But it can be more, eventually. At about 4x value, most central banks, companies and individuals will probably still prefer the Uno and Oro to all the other fiat currencies, which are backed by nothing. At the very least, in worst case scenarios, you have 1/4 or 25% the value of your money in metals, even if hyperinflation occurs. The UN may want to issue more coins in a range of convenient values.
7. However, for the Uno and Oro [and maybe other new UN coins], to be used conveniently, they must be practical and be very, very close to the ubiquity of the US$ today. The US$ has developed into the world's main trading and financial currency and it cannot be dethroned easily without huge disruptions and upsets in the world trading and financial systems. But it is well on the way to being replaced since no fiat currency has ever lasted more than 40-50 years. So, if the UN semi-fiat currency wants to replace the US$, it will take too long, too much effort and cause too much disruptions . Why not join the US$ instead? Make the Uno, Oro and other new UN semi-fiat currency EXACTLY EQUAL to US$. For example, the Uno can be worth exactly US$20 and the Oro exactly US$2,000, with other new UN currency issued as demand for practical usage requirements dictate. Thus the UN semi-fiat currency will be exactly equivalent to the US$ and fluctuate exactly as the US$ fluctuates. This means that the Uno, Oro and other UN monies can be used interchangeably with the current US$. For example, I buy a thumb drive priced at US$15 and I pay with one Uno, so I receive US$5 in US dollar bills as change. Thus, the UN$ and US$ currencies become interchangeable.
8. There is the small issue of creating a general name for the Uno, Oro and other UN currencies in general. I have used UN$ in para 7 above but a more accurate term is "US$ EQUIVALENT" or US$E or US$e or US$= or simply, Equi or equi [pronounced "ikwi"]. Since the coins are small in physical size, we cannot stamp many words on them, so maybe we can simply stamp "~1/4 au" and "~1/4 ag" since au and ag are the universally used scientific names for gold and silver. Or, better still, "~25% au" and "~25% ag" since the % notation is far more flexible and lends itself to any number from 1 to 100.. We must use the 'approximate' symbol "~" because the value of the US$ fluctuates and so thus the equi or US$e, namely the UN$. "What are you paying with?" reply "I'm paying with equis." The coins are too small for wordy text so the denomination of each coin can be simply stamped "=US$20", "=US$2,000", etc, using the "=" sign as a symbol for the equi or "equivalent". In time, we can even shorten the name of the UN coin as "=20" or "=2,000", using the "=" sign just as we use the $ sign or the euro symbol today.
9. Like all currencies, there is some risk of counterfeiting the equi. The UN should use every technology to make counterfeiting impossible or difficult. It can also use Interpol and all its member nations investigative and police resources to stamp out counterfeiters. Since the UN belongs to the whole planet, the world and every nation on earth, and it is doing God's work already and can do much more with the equi, a meeting can be called for the UN General Assembly to endorse the equi, work out the details of its ownership and rules of usage by the UN and its agencies as well as legislate international laws to stamp out any counterfeiting. The equi belongs to the world, every nation, and will be used to fund God's works and maybe even bail out countries that run into temporary financial troubles, so it is in the interest of every country to keep the equi safe and protected from counterfeiting.
10. The equi may seem a strange new idea or concept but is just a tiny step from established current central bank practices. Many central banks peg their currencies to the US$ at a fixed rate of exchange so when the US$ fluctuates up or down, their pegged currency follows similarly. For example, the HK$ is pegged at HK$7.80 to the US$. Thus an equi is simply a currency that pegs at 1:1 to the US$, that is, having the same exact value. Many central banks are considering dropping their pegs to the US$. They may find it better to equi-lise their currency to the US$ instead. All central banks keep vast amounts of US$, usually in the form of US [US$] treasuries, mostly to deter and to block currency speculators from bringing down their currency in speculative attacks. These treasuries are unproductive. One way to make them more useful is to create a use for them and equi-lising them is a good way. For example, suppose China, Japan, Russia, etc, etc, issue 1 equi for every US$2 they have in US$ treasuries. Thus their equis will be backed by twice the amount in US treasuries. A small fine print on their equis can state this. Another way to state this is to name ther equis, not "equis", which is a general term, but "trequis", as in "tr-equis" or "treasuries-backed equis" [pronounced "trek kwis" and not "tri kwis" because this sounds too like and may be confused for equis on Bloomberg and other spoken descriptions]. Thus, trequis are backed 2:1 by US treasuries and are as desirable as au or ag backed equis. Trequis issued by central banks thus become money and can be used for all trades requiring US$, including oil, commodities and other trades denominated in US$. At the same time, central banks will still hold their original US treasuries to ward off speculators attacks on their currency, as well as for other uses. 11. Another tiny step from established current large banks and other corporations practices: Most large banks and corporations issue notes and bonds, often even in US$. If these banks and corporations issue bonds and notes having the smallest unit as US$1, then effectively, these will be equis. Larger units would then be say, US$1,000, US$10,000, US$100,000, etc, which would actually be =1,000, =10,000, =100,000, etc. Issuing their notes and bonds this way, as equis, means that instead of having to find buyers for them, then exchanging these notes and bonds for cash before using these cash for business, instead, the banks and corporations can directly print their equis and use them for business directly, as cash, without having to sell them for cash first. Their counterparties will be happy to receive equis because these are direct US$ and just as safe or unsafe as normal notes and bonds, ie, it all depends on the creditworthiness of the issuing bank and corporation, like all notes and bonds. Thus, the business world will probably issue the first equis, since they are clearest headed about their self interests and less deterred by American displeasure.
12. The Age of the Equi has arrived and with it, the solutions to much of the world's troubles, both financial and otherwise.

The announcement by the United Nationsthis week that it will license the minting of silver and gold bullion coins bearing the UN logo may be the button that launches metal prices into orbit.
In its wide-ranging report this fall, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) stated that the system of currencies and international banking practices within today’s economies were inadequate, and responsible for the present economic crisis. The report advocates that the present monetary system, wherein the dollar acts as the global reserve currency be re-examined “with urgency”.
The UNCTAD Report was the first time a major multinational institution had forwarded such a suggestion or measure, although a number of countries, including Russia and Brazil have supported replacing the dollar as the world's reserve currency. China's central bank chief Zhou Xiaochuan has mentioned that the dollar could become a basket of currencies instead.
The UN commission dismissed such a widening, saying a multiple-country system "may be equally unstable, and not transparent."
The panel is seeking more monetary balance for developing countries, and a means for them to retain their reserves and domestic savings independent of foreign agencies and arrangements.
Panel Chair US economist Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel economics laureate, has made plain that there was "a growing consensus that there are problems with the dollar reserve system. Developing countries are lending the United States trillions dollars at almost zero interest rates when they have huge needs themselves," Stiglitz stated.
"It's indicative of the nature of the problem. It's a net transfer, in a sense, to the United States, a form of foreign aid."
A report contributor, Detlef Koffe, concluded that "Replacing the dollar with a bullion currency would solve some of the problems related to the potential of countries running large deficits and would help stability,"
US Fed spokesperson Patrick Paulsen acknowledged that there could be some strong reaction in the US to the global currency, and that it would “…be viewed as a step toward a New World Order. But those same people have probably lost patience with the money-changers as well.”
He clarified that he would “…nonetheless anticipate that the western currencies will continue to depreciate, given Asia’s ascendancy in trade and manufacturing, to find their own value and enable their economies to compete. This is a UN perogrative we cannot and should not control, it’s returning to what we had with Bretton-Woods.”
The UN decided to provide a “public option” savings currency, whereby currency mints will be licensed to mint two kinds of bullion coins the size of the 1€ coin - the Uno (silver ~$5) and the Oro (gold, ~$500). The names were adopted from the book “The Humanist”, which foresees the UN being better funded by 2015 via its licensing fees, expected to be 10-15%.
The coins have a marker chemical in them that enables their authentication and processing by modified retail ATM and exchange machines in Europe, which will be distributed globally. Any licensee, public or private, can produce such bullion coinage under contract. The United Nations is doing no more than what most countries do already, except that the value of its coins will reflect their bullion weight.
Armand Dufour of the European Bank welcomes their introduction. “People have enough Fiat currency options, government and banks cannot intrude on bullion coins – they will have their own inviolable value.”
He does have one concern, however. “If we see a dismounting from the US dollar, as is inevitable in the main view, there will be a strong move to the Oro, which may drive its price up to the point where governments will not allow its circulation; they will try to isolate it.”
“That’s when the fun begins.” he said.

2. This is a brilliant idea and so timely at this stage in history that it will surely work, but I think there are some reservations.
3. For example, the intention of the UN seems to displace the US$ and all other current major reserve currencies with the Uno [silver ~US$5] and the Oro [gold ~US$500] which will happen inevitably as only 18% of those surveyed recently believe the US$ will still be the main reserve currency by 2025.
4. Having the silver and gold metals in the coins themselves make them intrinsically valuable but I believe that THERE IS NOT ENOUGH METALS FOR THE WORLD's NEEDS FOR A MAJOR RESERVE CURRENCY. I believe that there is now far more US$ held by central banks, companies and individuals -- which proves it serves a reserve, banking, financial and trading needs -- that nothing else exists at the moment to even come close.
5. One solution may be to create a semi-fiat, semi-bullion Uno and Oro. In other words, simply have the Uno and Oro be nominally worth several times more than their metals contents. The Uno has about ~US$5 worth of silver. Why not give it a face value of say, ~US$20? About 4 times more than its silver content? And the Oro, say, ~US$2,000? This way, the UN will issue enough fiat money to fund itself and all its agencies most of whom are doing God's work in eradicating hunger, poverty, disease, and improve education, help for the disadvantaged and handicapped, etc, all God's works. If the UN is rich enough from this semi-fiat, semi-bullion currency, it can even begin to solve planetary problems that no single nation or group of nations even want to fund, such as global warming, pollution, destruction of forests and habitats, endangered species, clean water, ecological and natural disasters, etc and etc.
6. Of course, as a semi-fiat currency, the Uno and Oro can be any [reasonable] value the UN chooses and I have suggested 4x value of the metal contents. But it can be more, eventually. At about 4x value, most central banks, companies and individuals will probably still prefer the Uno and Oro to all the other fiat currencies, which are backed by nothing. At the very least, in worst case scenarios, you have 1/4 or 25% the value of your money in metals, even if hyperinflation occurs. The UN may want to issue more coins in a range of convenient values.
7. However, for the Uno and Oro [and maybe other new UN coins], to be used conveniently, they must be practical and be very, very close to the ubiquity of the US$ today. The US$ has developed into the world's main trading and financial currency and it cannot be dethroned easily without huge disruptions and upsets in the world trading and financial systems. But it is well on the way to being replaced since no fiat currency has ever lasted more than 40-50 years. So, if the UN semi-fiat currency wants to replace the US$, it will take too long, too much effort and cause too much disruptions . Why not join the US$ instead? Make the Uno, Oro and other new UN semi-fiat currency EXACTLY EQUAL to US$. For example, the Uno can be worth exactly US$20 and the Oro exactly US$2,000, with other new UN currency issued as demand for practical usage requirements dictate. Thus the UN semi-fiat currency will be exactly equivalent to the US$ and fluctuate exactly as the US$ fluctuates. This means that the Uno, Oro and other UN monies can be used interchangeably with the current US$. For example, I buy a thumb drive priced at US$15 and I pay with one Uno, so I receive US$5 in US dollar bills as change. Thus, the UN$ and US$ currencies become interchangeable.
8. There is the small issue of creating a general name for the Uno, Oro and other UN currencies in general. I have used UN$ in para 7 above but a more accurate term is "US$ EQUIVALENT" or US$E or US$e or US$= or simply, Equi or equi [pronounced "ikwi"]. Since the coins are small in physical size, we cannot stamp many words on them, so maybe we can simply stamp "~1/4 au" and "~1/4 ag" since au and ag are the universally used scientific names for gold and silver. Or, better still, "~25% au" and "~25% ag" since the % notation is far more flexible and lends itself to any number from 1 to 100.. We must use the 'approximate' symbol "~" because the value of the US$ fluctuates and so thus the equi or US$e, namely the UN$. "What are you paying with?" reply "I'm paying with equis." The coins are too small for wordy text so the denomination of each coin can be simply stamped "=US$20", "=US$2,000", etc, using the "=" sign as a symbol for the equi or "equivalent". In time, we can even shorten the name of the UN coin as "=20" or "=2,000", using the "=" sign just as we use the $ sign or the euro symbol today.
9. Like all currencies, there is some risk of counterfeiting the equi. The UN should use every technology to make counterfeiting impossible or difficult. It can also use Interpol and all its member nations investigative and police resources to stamp out counterfeiters. Since the UN belongs to the whole planet, the world and every nation on earth, and it is doing God's work already and can do much more with the equi, a meeting can be called for the UN General Assembly to endorse the equi, work out the details of its ownership and rules of usage by the UN and its agencies as well as legislate international laws to stamp out any counterfeiting. The equi belongs to the world, every nation, and will be used to fund God's works and maybe even bail out countries that run into temporary financial troubles, so it is in the interest of every country to keep the equi safe and protected from counterfeiting.
10. The equi may seem a strange new idea or concept but is just a tiny step from established current central bank practices. Many central banks peg their currencies to the US$ at a fixed rate of exchange so when the US$ fluctuates up or down, their pegged currency follows similarly. For example, the HK$ is pegged at HK$7.80 to the US$. Thus an equi is simply a currency that pegs at 1:1 to the US$, that is, having the same exact value. Many central banks are considering dropping their pegs to the US$. They may find it better to equi-lise their currency to the US$ instead. All central banks keep vast amounts of US$, usually in the form of US [US$] treasuries, mostly to deter and to block currency speculators from bringing down their currency in speculative attacks. These treasuries are unproductive. One way to make them more useful is to create a use for them and equi-lising them is a good way. For example, suppose China, Japan, Russia, etc, etc, issue 1 equi for every US$2 they have in US$ treasuries. Thus their equis will be backed by twice the amount in US treasuries. A small fine print on their equis can state this. Another way to state this is to name ther equis, not "equis", which is a general term, but "trequis", as in "tr-equis" or "treasuries-backed equis" [pronounced "trek kwis" and not "tri kwis" because this sounds too like and may be confused for equis on Bloomberg and other spoken descriptions]. Thus, trequis are backed 2:1 by US treasuries and are as desirable as au or ag backed equis. Trequis issued by central banks thus become money and can be used for all trades requiring US$, including oil, commodities and other trades denominated in US$. At the same time, central banks will still hold their original US treasuries to ward off speculators attacks on their currency, as well as for other uses. 11. Another tiny step from established current large banks and other corporations practices: Most large banks and corporations issue notes and bonds, often even in US$. If these banks and corporations issue bonds and notes having the smallest unit as US$1, then effectively, these will be equis. Larger units would then be say, US$1,000, US$10,000, US$100,000, etc, which would actually be =1,000, =10,000, =100,000, etc. Issuing their notes and bonds this way, as equis, means that instead of having to find buyers for them, then exchanging these notes and bonds for cash before using these cash for business, instead, the banks and corporations can directly print their equis and use them for business directly, as cash, without having to sell them for cash first. Their counterparties will be happy to receive equis because these are direct US$ and just as safe or unsafe as normal notes and bonds, ie, it all depends on the creditworthiness of the issuing bank and corporation, like all notes and bonds. Thus, the business world will probably issue the first equis, since they are clearest headed about their self interests and less deterred by American displeasure.
12. The Age of the Equi has arrived and with it, the solutions to much of the world's troubles, both financial and otherwise.

Idea: 5 Stages of Ideology

Stage 1 - Seizing Power: A man seizes power. He finds that the only way to remain in power is to Promulgate rules, laws and behaviour, on pain of fearsome punishment, that entrench his power.
Stage 2 - Ideology Invented: However, he finds that rules and laws alone are one-time, stopgap, temporary and ineffective to consolidate his power so he integrates all his rules, laws and required behaviours into a cloak of Belief Systems or Ideology which are more permanent, more comprehensive, more readily embraced and subscribed to, by his people.
Stage 3 - Ideology Pervades Whole Society: This Ideology is usually effective and works its way into every facet of society and effectively controls all behaviours thus consolidating his power.
Stage 4 - Ideology Grips Even Ideologer: But once the Ideology takes root and informs every behaviour, the Promulgator finds that he himself, even though he originated every single rule or law and ordained every behaviour, becomes bound by it AND CANNOT EVEN BREAK IT HIMSELF because then his people would be horrified or broken from his spell.
Stage 5 - Ideology Fails, Destroys Society: Society is now fixated by its Ideology. Everyone, without exception, including the Promulgator, must obey. Even after the Promulgator dies and whether or not his son takes over power, the new ruler is also bound rigidly to the Ideology. Thus, this is how ideologies develop a life of its own and quickly becomes independent of its Promulgator and continues long after he is dead. Since the Ideology cannot be changed, otherwise it is not ideology and cannot work, everyone from the Promulgator to the lowest citizen are trapped in rigid, unchangeable, replays of old responses and mindsets even as the world and society change increasingly faster and more dramatically. Thus, all ideologies fail. Almost all societies thus come to be ruled by, and worship, false gods. In a sense, the Ideology becomes the power and the ruler. So be very careful what you create because you will quickly be bound by it. Perhaps Man cannot live -- and certainly rulers cannot rule -- without Ideology but it always convulses, even destroys, the societies it has in its grip, eventually.

Ideas: Creating a Cycling CityState
1. In a tiny, unhilly islet of 46km x 23km, cycling to work like Amsterdamers is truly feasible. It is much faster than the current procedure of walking to the bus stop, wait for a shuttle bus to take you to the bus interchange, then wait again for a crowded bus or train, only to reach some distance short of your final destination, thus requiring you to walk again or take another shuttle bus to your final destination. If you were cycling, you would mount your bicycle from below your block and cycle directly to your destination -- and be on your way the moment you mount your bicycle -- arriving directly at your final destination without any need for walking, waiting or shuttle bus, etc. Thus, on a bicycle, you bypass the entire current Hub&Spoke system of Shuttle and Main buses/trains imposed by our geniuses who stupidly copied this Hub&Spoke system from large cities. What's more, you cycle DIRECT to your destination, not take a meandering route that buses and trains take to maximise profits. You are also assured of a seat on your bicycle. If cycling works in Singapore, there will be less bus/train passenger congestion, reduced road traffic congestion and less vehicular pollution of the air.
2. However, there are a few drawbacks to cycling including Safety, Sweating, Parking, Exertion.
3. For Safety, cyclists should be given preferably, their own lane. Cyclists will include battery-powered bicycles, usually about the same top speed as a fast cyclist. Cyclist Helmets should probably be mandatory. Users who find a defective bicycle may want to either physically lock it at a designated Defective Bicycles Return centre at central high-traffic locations or simply call or SMS a Defective Bicycles Reporting telephone number, giving a short description of the Defect/s and the Location of the defective bicycle. Many tourists will find that exploring Singapore by bicycle is a great way to see and experience the City since taxis, buses or trains are too enclosed and restricted in views as well as being too fast and travel only on roads. Since bicycles can be picked up from almost anywhere and dumped almost anywhere, this will be a boon for tourists as well as locals. GPS devices are very cheap nowadays, at about S$150 for a basic one with a Singapore map so these can be rented to tourists to affix onto their bicycle handlebars, etc. GPS satellite navigation works as well on foot or bicycle as on cars. Singapore Tourist Board can draw up many Bicycle Tours routes to maximise tourist enjoyment of the islet. Tourists can also hire electric bicycles instead of manual cycling. Tourist groups should be led by a Tour Leader and for bigger groups, an additional Tour Assistant, to maximise safety and convenience as well as the benefits of a knowledgeable Tour Leader who can give commentary and help to make the Bicycle Tour a great way to experience Singapore. For tourist and resident alike, there should be more Recreational Cycling Routes like that of the current East Coast Park and these can be quickly and cheaply built around reservoirs, nature trails, scenic spots, etc. These should be safe and easy enough for young bikers on small bicycles accompanying parents.
16. Currently, all roads and footpaths on both sides of the road are well-lit at night but all users should also carry a bright headlamp that can be fixed to the handlebar for night riding for additional safety. 2 or 3 velcro strips can make fixing on and removing easy. Currently, the Left Cycle Path is raised as a pedestrian path or pavement although with easy slopes or ramps designed for wheelchair friendly access but once the authorities find which routes are heavily used, they may want to level these pavements and asphalt them for easier and faster riding.
17. A small plaque should be affixed prominently to the handlebar or some other very visible part of every bicycle. The plaque should read: "User use this bicycle at own risk. To read more about your rights, visit cycling.com.sg for full terms and conditions." This is necessary because there are many thousands of tourists in Singapore each day and many will use the bicycles, so need a reminder of the Terms & Conditions [T&C] which most residents will know already.
18. Besides the above, which is mainly cycling as transportation, there can be recreational cycling. Recreational cycling can be learning to ride a unicycle, low-wire [safe] riding on a wire, two or more persons balanced on a bicycle, mountain bike riding through rough countryside, formation cycling of mass cyclists riding in formation like in National Day Parades, perhaps weaving in and out in patterns, trick cycling, etc. Fashionwear for cycling can be a project for Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the polytechnics. They can also develop and invent wearables and bags, holders and other gadgets to make cycling more convenient, fun and safer, in rain or sun. A small kit that holds a tiny airpump, bell, headlamp, flashers, reflective self-curling armbands [S$2 at Daiso], raincoat, etc, will sell well and be very convenient.
19. Thus, Singapore can become a Cycling City, with hardly any govt expenditure or work.

a. Sorry to address you all in one email rather than individually, but I wanted to be fair, so that you all receive this on the same day, so that if and when you decide to implement some of my cycling ideas below, you will all start at the same starting line in seeking sponsors to donate free bicycles and their corresponding bicycle stands. Naturally, the earlier tertiary institutions will get the more prestigious sponsors.
b. My ideas on Creating A Cycling City, the subject of my blog post [below], are designed to be implemented island-wide in Singapore but there are some road bumps along the way. For one, implementing it means some loss of revenue by the govt bus, train and even taxi companies. Two, the govt loses some control over the physical meanderings of each Singaporean -- instead of being predictably and sheep-like being herded in buses and trains, those who choose to cycle will climb on a bicycle and ride off anywhere he wants! A no-no. Three is Newton's First Law, or Inertia, which opposes change of any sort, no matter how beneficial. Four is timidity of those in charge.
c. Casting around, I noticed that your universities like NUS, NTU, and the half dozen Polytechnics or so, have huge [relatively] campuses -- many blocks spread over an unwalkable distance. Ah, perhaps, here, you can implement my ideas. Your campuses also suffer from inadequate public transport, so my solutions will be a godsend for staff and students alike -- also, the govt bus, train and taxi monopolies lose no money! Everything to gain and nothing to lose. All the students and staff are adult and there is little vehicular traffic within campus. Ideal.
d. In addition, each of your campuses are directly under your management, so you can implement my ideas without need to check with higher authority -- you ARE the higher authority and the only authority needed to implement the project.
e. Having control over your campuses means you can simply make a speech, email all your staff and students, informing them to avoid walking on the Left Footpath, and that's about it. It's done! Your students and staff, being of higher intelligence than the general population, are the easiest group to ride away with my ideas without any further instruction or policing. Everything is easy.
f. How do you start? Here, the race for the most prestigious sponsors begins. Choose your target. SIA? DBS Bank? Keppel? Citibank? SingTel? There are so many. Remember that, to these big advertising spenders, sponsoring a few thousand bicycles and stands is peanuts. In addition, these advertisers are very aware of the fact that your staff and students are the creme de la creme of Singapore and future leaders, professionals, movers and shakers, not to mention what they love best, High Net Worth Individuals who will have the monies to spend on their products and services. These advertisers will also want to create goodwill in your students so as to get some of your best students as future employees. So catch them young, here in your campus. With bicycles that they will love to jump on, ride to their lectures, and park almost anywhere nearby. Walking is so last century. Soon, all campuses will be run this way.
h. For your campus bicycles, there probably needs to be a tag that reads "Property of NUS for use within campus only." Or some such. Do forward and discuss these ideas with your colleagues and subordinates and even peer review the ideas for originality and flaws. If you have a Cycling Club, please also forward to them, thanks. Well, that's about it. Very simple ideas to implement. Imagine the benefit. Everyone on campus will simply pick up the nearest bicycle, ride to wherever, then park it and do his business. Some day, all campuses will be run this way. In an injury arising from, say, a defective bicycle, the user will be paid from this group insurance policy. l. There are many big bicycle manufacturers in Taiwan who can easily adapt models for your campus use. Google for them.
m. If you want a bit of levity, humour and even whimsy on your campus, you could erect small 'traffic signs' that read, say, "You are entering a Bicycle Town/Campus"; "Give way to Bicycles"; "Bicycles have right of way"; "2 Wheels good, 4 Wheels bad"; etc. Design-wise, these signs could incorporate the Bicycle graphic Symbol in place of the word.

14. Free bicycles are rugged and lasts for even a decade but the tyres, if like current air-inflated tyres, may need air pumping once in a while. Bicycle hand-pumps are small and cheap, at S$2 each at Daiso, and most bicycle users would carry a small one and inflate their bicycles themselves. Better still, companies and offices could also buy several for loan to their employees, visitors or the public. Even better still, public bicycle pumps could be fixed by a chain to most public places such as at bicycle stands for more convenience. Or, someone could invent solid tyres or permanently sealed constant pressure tyres, not very difficult. Cars already have tubeless tyres so the modest requirements of a bicycle would need only a onetime inflating of air and permanently sealed thereafter for the lifetime of the bicycle.
15. Of course, many regular riders will buy their own bicycles, even motorised ones, preferably with removeable batteries that can then be recharged in the office while they work. Many tourists will find that exploring Singapore by bicycle is a great way to see and experience the City since taxis, buses or trains are too enclosed and restricted in views as well as being too fast and travel only on roads. Since bicycles can be picked up from almost anywhere and dumped almost anywhere, this will be a boon for tourists as well as locals. GPS devices are very cheap nowadays, at about S$150 for a basic one with a Singapore map so these can be rented to tourists to affix onto their bicycle handlebars, etc. GPS satellite navigation works as well on foot or bicycle as on cars. Singapore Tourist Board can draw up many Bicycle Tours routes to maximise tourist enjoyment of the islet. Tourists can also hire electric bicycles instead of manual cycling. Tourist groups should be led by a Tour Leader and for bigger groups, an additional Tour Assistant, to maximise safety and convenience as well as the benefits of a knowledgeable Tour Leader who can give commentary and help to make the Bicycle Tour a great way to experience Singapore. For tourist and resident alike, there should be more Recreational Cycling Routes like that of the current East Coast Park and these can be quickly and cheaply built around reservoirs, nature trails, scenic spots, etc. These should be safe and easy enough for young bikers on small bicycles accompanying parents.
16. Currently, all roads and footpaths on both sides of the road are well-lit at night but all users should also carry a bright headlamp that can be fixed to the handlebar for night riding for additional safety. 2 or 3 velcro strips can make fixing on and removing easy. Currently, the Left Cycle Path is raised as a pedestrian path or pavement although with easy slopes or ramps designed for wheelchair friendly access but once the authorities find which routes are heavily used, they may want to level these pavements and asphalt them for easier and faster riding.
17. A small plaque should be affixed prominently to the handlebar or some other very visible part of every bicycle. The plaque should read: "User use this bicycle at own risk. To read more about your rights, visit cycling.com.sg for full terms and conditions." This is necessary because there are many thousands of tourists in Singapore each day and many will use the bicycles, so need a reminder of the Terms & Conditions [T&C] which most residents will know already.
18. Besides the above, which is mainly cycling as transportation, there can be recreational cycling. Recreational cycling can be learning to ride a unicycle, low-wire [safe] riding on a wire, two or more persons balanced on a bicycle, mountain bike riding through rough countryside, formation cycling of mass cyclists riding in formation like in National Day Parades, perhaps weaving in and out in patterns, trick cycling, etc. Fashionwear for cycling can be a project for Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the polytechnics. They can also develop and invent wearables and bags, holders and other gadgets to make cycling more convenient, fun and safer, in rain or sun. A small kit that holds a tiny airpump, bell, headlamp, flashers, reflective self-curling armbands [S$2 at Daiso], raincoat, etc, will sell well and be very convenient.
19. Thus, Singapore can become a Cycling City, with hardly any govt expenditure or work.
Footnote: In 2007, there were 551 cyclists accidents with 22 deaths; in 2008, 604 with 22 deaths; in 2009, 583 with 19 deaths. If we implement just some of the safety ideas in my article above, there need not be any deaths at all.

Dear Presidents and Principals of universities and polytechnics,
a. Sorry to address you all in one email rather than individually, but I wanted to be fair, so that you all receive this on the same day, so that if and when you decide to implement some of my cycling ideas below, you will all start at the same starting line in seeking sponsors to donate free bicycles and their corresponding bicycle stands. Naturally, the earlier tertiary institutions will get the more prestigious sponsors.
b. My ideas on Creating A Cycling City, the subject of my blog post [below], are designed to be implemented island-wide in Singapore but there are some road bumps along the way. For one, implementing it means some loss of revenue by the govt bus, train and even taxi companies. Two, the govt loses some control over the physical meanderings of each Singaporean -- instead of being predictably and sheep-like being herded in buses and trains, those who choose to cycle will climb on a bicycle and ride off anywhere he wants! A no-no. Three is Newton's First Law, or Inertia, which opposes change of any sort, no matter how beneficial. Four is timidity of those in charge.
c. Casting around, I noticed that your universities like NUS, NTU, and the half dozen Polytechnics or so, have huge [relatively] campuses -- many blocks spread over an unwalkable distance. Ah, perhaps, here, you can implement my ideas. Your campuses also suffer from inadequate public transport, so my solutions will be a godsend for staff and students alike -- also, the govt bus, train and taxi monopolies lose no money! Everything to gain and nothing to lose. All the students and staff are adult and there is little vehicular traffic within campus. Ideal.
d. In addition, each of your campuses are directly under your management, so you can implement my ideas without need to check with higher authority -- you ARE the higher authority and the only authority needed to implement the project.
e. Having control over your campuses means you can simply make a speech, email all your staff and students, informing them to avoid walking on the Left Footpath, and that's about it. It's done! Your students and staff, being of higher intelligence than the general population, are the easiest group to ride away with my ideas without any further instruction or policing. Everything is easy.
f. How do you start? Here, the race for the most prestigious sponsors begins. Choose your target. SIA? DBS Bank? Keppel? Citibank? SingTel? There are so many. Remember that, to these big advertising spenders, sponsoring a few thousand bicycles and stands is peanuts. In paragraph 12, I wrote that a fullpage colour advertisement in the Straits Times for one day, costs ~S$30,000 [several times more if published in a choice position in the paper]. This one day advertisement can buy several hundred bicycles for your campus that will last a decade. So, advertisers will be only too happy to sponsor free bicycles for your campus.
g. In addition, these advertisers are very aware of the fact that your staff and students are the creme de la creme of Singapore and future leaders, professionals, movers and shakers, not to mention what they love best, High Net Worth Individuals who will have the monies to spend on their products and services. These advertisers will also want to create goodwill in your students so as to get some of your best students as future employees. So catch them young, here in your campus. With bicycles that they will love to jump on, ride to their lectures, and park almost anywhere nearby. Walking is so last century. Soon, all campuses will be run this way.
h. For your campus bicycles, there probably needs to be a tag that reads "Property of NUS for use within campus only." Or some such. Do forward and discuss these ideas with your colleagues and subordinates and even peer review the ideas for originality and flaws. If you have a Cycling Club, please also forward to them, thanks. Well, that's about it. Very simple ideas to implement. Imagine the benefit. Everyone on campus will simply pick up the nearest bicycle, ride to wherever, then park it and do his business. Some day, all campuses will be run this way. By the way, my ideas are not protected by Intellectual Property laws so feel free to use, abuse, adapt, plagiarise, forward, all without need for attribution. Regards and good day.
i. Unlike a national cycling plan, whose riders will primarily be men, campuses will have ~50% female riders. This means that all bicycles should be 'female' bicycles for easy mounting and female decorum.
j. You may want to consider spending ~50 cents per user per year [students, staff and small number of Others] for a group insurance policy covering all bicycle use within campus. In an injury arising from, say, a defective bicycle, the user will be paid from this group insurance policy. This policy can also cover 3rd Party like say, a pedestrian injured by a student/staff cyclist, who will then be paid by the policy. Shop around for the best insurance rates.
k. Sponsors/donors of the bicycles may want to consult their advertising agency to design their livery on the bicycles for more effective branding of their bicycles. Donors need not be big advertisers, can be an individual philantropist, etc.
l. There are many big bicycle manufacturers in Taiwan who can easily adapt models for your campus use. Google for them.
m. If you want a bit of levity, humour and even whimsy on your campus, you could erect small 'traffic signs' that read, say, "You are entering a Bicycle Town/Campus"; "Give way to Bicycles"; "Bicycles have right of way"; "2 Wheels good, 4 Wheels bad"; etc. Design-wise, these signs could incorporate the Bicycle graphic Symbol in place of the word.

SINGAPORE POSTS DROP IN GROWTH OF ECONOMY

SINGAPORE — Singapore's economy shrank at an annual rate of 5.8 percent in the first quarter, according to figures released on Monday, exceeding the most pessimistic forecast by economists, as makers of pharmaceuticals cut production.
The decline in gross domestic product, reported by the Trade Ministry, was the first in almost two years. It compared with growth of 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter.
The economic report added to speculation that the central bank would seek to stimulate growth by abandoning its policy of a "modest and gradual appreciation" in the currency at a twice-yearly review on Tuesday.
The government forecasts that Singapore's growth may fall to as little as 3 percent this year from 8.4 percent last year, as exports of electronics slow.
A rebound in production of drugs may soften the slump, said Chua Hak Bin, an economist at DBS Group.
"This report tells us that the economy is slowing down, but I think it is slowing down at a moderate pace," he said. "The decline was largely due to the volatility in pharmaceuticals."
Pharmaceutical output fell because manufacturers switched to producing different chemicals and shut plants for cleaning, said Song Seng Wun, an economist at G.K. Goh.
Shutdowns and expansions cause swings in output because of the small number of factories in Singapore.
Some analysts said the vital electronics industry, accounting for nearly a third of manufacturing output and about half of non-oil exports, could post stronger output in the second quarter as global demand picks up. That would allow Singapore to avoid a recession, which occurs when an economy contracts for two consecutive quarters.
"The first quarter's contraction was driven mostly by volatility in the pharmaceuticals industry," said Euben Paracuelles, economist at DBS Bank.
"Electronics indicators show there is a likely upturn in the electronics cycle. Going forward we don't think there is a risk of recession."
Last Wednesday, the Asian Development Bank forecast that economic growth in Asia's developing nations will slow to 6.5 percent this year from a seven-year high of 7.3 percent in 2004. Growth in Singapore may slow to 4.1 percent from 8.4 percent.
Last Tuesday, Homi Kharas, the top regional economist at the World Bank, said it was planning to cut the 2005 economic growth forecast for Asia excluding Japan and the Indian subcontinent because it expected oil record prices to curb demand in Europe and Japan.
In Singapore, manufacturing, which accounts for a quarter of the economy, rose 3 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, slowing from an expansion of 14.1 percent in the previous three months. In 2004, manufacturing grew by 14 percent.
"The first quarter was soft for business machines like printers and servers," said J.R. Ong, managing director of First Engineering, which supplies parts to Hewlett-Packard and Seagate Technology.
Singapore has offered tax breaks to lure drug makers to the island to reduce its reliance on electronics.
"For Singapore it's a double whammy from electronics and pharmaceuticals," said Nizam Idris, an economist at IDEAglobal in Singapore.
"Other Asian countries probably won't see such a sharp slowdown because they are largely affected by weaker electronics demand."

1. Over the years, I have often read Singapore news like this one above in which the GDP drops several percent due to the pharmaceutical sector 'pills factory closed for cleaning'.
2. Now, I know that LIE KY LHL have spent billions to lure pharmaceutical companies to set up factories in Singapore BUT THE TOTAL NUMBER IS VERY SMALL, PROBABLY NO MORE THAN HALF A DOZEN. So, how is it that when 1 or 2 such pills factories close for cleaning, which they have to do now and then, THIS AFFECTS THE GDP TO THE TUNE OF SEVERAL PERCENT?
3. This means that the whole so-called pharmaceutical industry is so small it shouldn't even be called a sector. The case is exactly the same in the 'electronics sector', another grandiose term for a couple of Seagate disk drive factories. When 1 or 2 factories slow production, the effect is a couple of percent drop in the 'sector'. Thus, like every Look Good operation mounted by the LIEs, all the so-called "sectors" in Singapore's "economy" are pretty fake, false. Truth is, we don't really have an "economy", only a few factories making different products -- like pills or disk drives.
4. Thus, we have no economy, really. Only a couple of factories here and there. Everything is miniscule in scale. This means that our "GDP" is also not real GDP but a simple-to-manipulate number that very quickly and responsively responds to any incentive -- simply lure a few factories to set up in Singapore and voila! you have another "economic sector" boosting GDP several percent. And because there are so few factories, you can easily manipulate their production higher [or lower] at will, by giving incentives, etc.
5. Conclusion: Singapore has no economy. It is too miniscule an islet of 700 sq km [270 sq miles]. Singapore is not a country although it has every trapping of a country like President, Cabinet, Parliament, Ministries and even a very expensive military -- again, too miniscule. Its GDP is not real GDP but a simple sum total of a few hundreds of factory and office productions, mostly foreign. That is why, when LIE KY LHL pull out all the stops, 'GDP growth' can seem miraculous -- just a few factories increasing output. And based on these seemingly impressive GDP growth numbers, they award themselves even more millions in bonuses. Miracle workers? The most successful 'economy' and 'country'? No, more like David Copperfield illusionists.
6. How is this Great Illusion created? Here is the Secret: first, take the British-started CPF and enormously increase it to 40% of every employee's pay and bonus, the highest forced savings in the world. In just ~2 decades, you have billions and billions in govt coffers to play with, which you use to buy personal clout for yourself and big welcomes everywhere you visit, and to get Advisor positions on unscrupulous company boards who covet some of those billions invested in their companies.
7. However, CPF nominally belongs to the people, so to permanently take most of these monies, you make the British-started HDB [then called the SIT] the monopoly for 85% of all housing, then sell enormously overpriced flats at humongous profits paid for by the victims/people using their CPF monies, so they officially hand over most of their CPF monies to you. Also, to ensure they cannot take back what little is left of their CPF monies, you set rules to practically prevent any lump sum withdrawals, only small monthly sums upon reaching a very advanced age -- this is a classic pyramid scheme, with new workers CPF paying off the retired ones withdrawing their small monthly sums, so the bulk is yours to keep.
8. To further your billions, OverTax & UnderSpend on everything, from schools to hospitals, giving the moronic excuse of 'Deliberate UnderSupply For More Efficient Use of resources'. Make the people pay for everything. They cannot protest because you make it illegal to hold even a 1-man protest. You also repeatedly rig elections so need not fear being voted out. You blackmail voters into voting you or else their flats, blocks and neighbourhoods will be deliberately left to "degenerate into slums" meaning their flats' value will drop.
9. Control every mass media so that every single word or image is fawning and favourable to you. Over decades, there isn't a single negative word or image of you. Extend this papaganda to schools from kindergartens which you also build and control, to the 3 universities. Make even academics fear to criticise any of your policies by sacking some, like former lecturer Dr CHEE Soon Juan, now permanently unemployed and a bankrupt.
10. Prosecute and sue political opponents so that at every election, you are returned to power on Nomination Day itself, there being too few opposition candidates who dare contest. To ensure judges convict and find for your lawsuits, sack some like former Justice Michael KHOO. Also promote some like retired Justice Sinnathuray all the way to the Supreme Court for verdicting what you want. Promote to Chief Justice, CHAN Sek Keong when, as AG, he ridiculously refused to prosecute your son then-DPM LEE Hsien Loong together with PM GOH Chok Tong, DPM Tony TAN and PAP MP S VASOO for breaking your own law on illegal entry into polling stations as unauthorised persons.
11. Refuse to hold official commissions of inquiry when caught accepting illegal 15% discounts on purchases of luxury condos, totalling >S$1m in all for the famiLEE. Instead, hold a fake 'hearing' in Parliament and start by threatening the 2 Opposition MPs that you will sue if they dare say anything, so they kept quiet throughout. Then have every word and image airbrushed to appear innocent, cleared and angelic, by your tightly controlled media.
12. With your billions and billions, spend enough to make your little islet clean and green, very cheaply using huge hordes of cheap foreign workers, who live in exploited wretched conditions with squat toilet holes overflowing with faeces, living quarters so cramped they often catch diseases from one another such as chicken pox, etc, living in modified ship containers in secluded forest so the world cannot see the wretchedness. Spend enough on public buildings to look First World.
13. But the key to looking First World is luring the >26,000 foreign companies to locate in Singapore. This is done by giving generous incentives such as tax holidays, grants and free monies -- for example, the ~half dozen pills factories got billions in incentives. Never mind if you lose money on luring these >26,000 foreign companies, and never make money from them, they make your little islet look like the Hubs which you constantly boast of, a Hub of Hubs, etc. They are important because they do things your small little domestic rubber-slippers and plastic-pails-making companies cannot even begin to do and can never master the kind of skills needed for these truly First World foreign companies. These >26,000 foreign companies are what truly make your little islet First World. The Singaporeans they employ get good wages and learn First World skills and do First World kind of work in First World swank offices, gleaming office towers and modern factories. So, these >26,000 foreign companies are the key reasons you look First World, not anything local which you have, which are pathetically Second World at best.
14. To sum up, the real money is obtained by screwing the people, from the CPF-HDB nexus, which billions are what you see in the GIC which you make sure you and your son control. These hundreds of billions, together with more hundreds of billions in Temasek Holdings, which your daughter in law controls, give the impression of success. After all, what bigger symbol of success and First Worldness than billions? But these are all borrowed billions, which, when the tide turns and all the Bubbles burst, will have to be returned to the people one way or another, unless you let them starve and sleep in the streets. The other major component of First Worldness are the >26,000 foreign companies, lured here at great losses and expense, but which Look Good. Yes, if you use every dirty trick in the book to Look Good, you do succeed. At least, for some time until someone comes along and exposes your Secret.
Note 1: For the LIEs most recent cheap trick -- their 3rd Wave of Labour -- done as usual, to excess in the last decade or so, I highly recommend you read "ICONOCLASSING Pt 2": http://i-came-i-saw-i-solved-it.blogspot.com/2008/06/iconoclassing-pt-2.html . The point is that, since Singapore is too miniscule to be a real economy, importing just a few thousands of foreign workers pushes up the GDP by several percent, just like luring half a dozen pills factories. When you have no ideas or understanding of how the economy works, you are a rat pressing Green Levers and thinking you are a great success, when all you are doing is distorting the entire little, miniscule islet's education, social, economic, housing, even cultural lives into one stupendously STUPID meaningless pressing of green levers to make more marbles drop into your cage. The unthinking, meaninglessness of lab rats.
Note 2 [29 Oct 2010]: 70% of Singapore's economy is made up by government monopolies or Govt Linked Companies [GLCs]. These rapacious govt monopolies raise prices every year, for example, the bus monopoly raised bus fares 7 times in 8 years. Since the increased prices = increased 'economic' activity = increase in GDP, at least 3-4% of Singapore's annual GDP 'growth' is thus assured. The rest of GDP growth is produced by the mostly MNCs and some local companies. THESE THUS BECOME DISPROPORTIONATELY HUGE 'SWING FACTORS'. This is why whenever a couple of pills factories close for their regular cleanings, the GDP fluctuates violently, due to their being Swing Factors to the steady, assured 3-4% GDP 'growth' that comes from GLCs raising prices every year. The people are too cowed to protest or complain. This is also why the nepot famiLEE of LIE KY, 2A1B and WKS and their fellow robbers, give themselves millions in 'GDP bonuses' according to a secret formula, rewarding themselves for any GDP growth, which, as I have explained, are practically assured to the tune of 3-4% annually, simply by the GLC monopolies constantly raising prices. Thus, LIE KY pays himself >half a million dollars a MONTH, and even more for GDP 'growth'!

SINGAPORE POSTS DROP IN GROWTH OF ECONOMY

SINGAPORE — Singapore's economy shrank at an annual rate of 5.8 percent in the first quarter, according to figures released on Monday, exceeding the most pessimistic forecast by economists, as makers of pharmaceuticals cut production.
The decline in gross domestic product, reported by the Trade Ministry, was the first in almost two years. It compared with growth of 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter.
The economic report added to speculation that the central bank would seek to stimulate growth by abandoning its policy of a "modest and gradual appreciation" in the currency at a twice-yearly review on Tuesday.
The government forecasts that Singapore's growth may fall to as little as 3 percent this year from 8.4 percent last year, as exports of electronics slow.
A rebound in production of drugs may soften the slump, said Chua Hak Bin, an economist at DBS Group.
"This report tells us that the economy is slowing down, but I think it is slowing down at a moderate pace," he said. "The decline was largely due to the volatility in pharmaceuticals."
Pharmaceutical output fell because manufacturers switched to producing different chemicals and shut plants for cleaning, said Song Seng Wun, an economist at G.K. Goh.
Shutdowns and expansions cause swings in output because of the small number of factories in Singapore.
Some analysts said the vital electronics industry, accounting for nearly a third of manufacturing output and about half of non-oil exports, could post stronger output in the second quarter as global demand picks up. That would allow Singapore to avoid a recession, which occurs when an economy contracts for two consecutive quarters.
"The first quarter's contraction was driven mostly by volatility in the pharmaceuticals industry," said Euben Paracuelles, economist at DBS Bank.
"Electronics indicators show there is a likely upturn in the electronics cycle. Going forward we don't think there is a risk of recession."
Last Wednesday, the Asian Development Bank forecast that economic growth in Asia's developing nations will slow to 6.5 percent this year from a seven-year high of 7.3 percent in 2004. Growth in Singapore may slow to 4.1 percent from 8.4 percent.
Last Tuesday, Homi Kharas, the top regional economist at the World Bank, said it was planning to cut the 2005 economic growth forecast for Asia excluding Japan and the Indian subcontinent because it expected oil record prices to curb demand in Europe and Japan.
In Singapore, manufacturing, which accounts for a quarter of the economy, rose 3 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, slowing from an expansion of 14.1 percent in the previous three months. In 2004, manufacturing grew by 14 percent.
"The first quarter was soft for business machines like printers and servers," said J.R. Ong, managing director of First Engineering, which supplies parts to Hewlett-Packard and Seagate Technology.
Singapore has offered tax breaks to lure drug makers to the island to reduce its reliance on electronics.
"For Singapore it's a double whammy from electronics and pharmaceuticals," said Nizam Idris, an economist at IDEAglobal in Singapore.
"Other Asian countries probably won't see such a sharp slowdown because they are largely affected by weaker electronics demand."

1. Over the years, I have often read Singapore news like this one above in which the GDP drops several percent due to the pharmaceutical sector 'pills factory closed for cleaning'.
2. Now, I know that LIE KY LHL have spent billions to lure pharmaceutical companies to set up factories in Singapore BUT THE TOTAL NUMBER IS VERY SMALL, PROBABLY NO MORE THAN HALF A DOZEN. So, how is it that when 1 or 2 such pills factories close for cleaning, which they have to do now and then, THIS AFFECTS THE GDP TO THE TUNE OF SEVERAL PERCENT?
3. This means that the whole so-called pharmaceutical industry is so small it shouldn't even be called a sector. The case is exactly the same in the 'electronics sector', another grandiose term for a couple of Seagate disk drive factories. When 1 or 2 factories slow production, the effect is a couple of percent drop in the 'sector'. Thus, like every Look Good operation mounted by the LIEs, all the so-called "sectors" in Singapore's "economy" are pretty fake, false. Truth is, we don't really have an "economy", only a few factories making different products -- like pills or disk drives.
4. Thus, we have no economy, really. Only a couple of factories here and there. Everything is miniscule in scale. This means that our "GDP" is also not real GDP but a simple-to-manipulate number that very quickly and responsively responds to any incentive -- simply lure a few factories to set up in Singapore and voila! you have another "economic sector" boosting GDP several percent. And because there are so few factories, you can easily manipulate their production higher [or lower] at will, by giving incentives, etc.
5. Conclusion: Singapore has no economy. It is too miniscule an islet of 700 sq km [270 sq miles]. Singapore is not a country although it has every trapping of a country like President, Cabinet, Parliament, Ministries and even a very expensive military -- again, too miniscule. Its GDP is not real GDP but a simple sum total of a few hundreds of factory and office productions, mostly foreign. That is why, when LIE KY LHL pull out all the stops, 'GDP growth' can seem miraculous -- just a few factories increasing output. And based on these seemingly impressive GDP growth numbers, they award themselves even more millions in bonuses. Miracle workers? The most successful 'economy' and 'country'? No, more like David Copperfield illusionists.
6. How is this Great Illusion created? Here is the Secret: first, take the British-started CPF and enormously increase it to 40% of every employee's pay and bonus, the highest forced savings in the world. In just ~2 decades, you have billions and billions in govt coffers to play with, which you use to buy personal clout for yourself and big welcomes everywhere you visit, and to get Advisor positions on unscrupulous company boards who covet some of those billions invested in their companies.
7. However, CPF nominally belongs to the people, so to permanently take most of these monies, you make the British-started HDB [then called the SIT] the monopoly for 85% of all housing, then sell enormously overpriced flats at humongous profits paid for by the victims/people using their CPF monies, so they officially hand over most of their CPF monies to you. Also, to ensure they cannot take back what little is left of their CPF monies, you set rules to practically prevent any lump sum withdrawals, only small monthly sums upon reaching a very advanced age -- this is a classic pyramid scheme, with new workers CPF paying off the retired ones withdrawing their small monthly sums, so the bulk is yours to keep.
8. To further your billions, OverTax & UnderSpend on everything, from schools to hospitals, giving the moronic excuse of 'Deliberate UnderSupply For More Efficient Use of resources'. Make the people pay for everything. They cannot protest because you make it illegal to hold even a 1-man protest. You also repeatedly rig elections so need not fear being voted out. You blackmail voters into voting you or else their flats, blocks and neighbourhoods will be deliberately left to "degenerate into slums" meaning their flats' value will drop.
9. Control every mass media so that every single word or image is fawning and favourable to you. Over decades, there isn't a single negative word or image of you. Extend this papaganda to schools from kindergartens which you also build and control, to the 3 universities. Make even academics fear to criticise any of your policies by sacking some, like former lecturer Dr CHEE Soon Juan, now permanently unemployed and a bankrupt.
10. Prosecute and sue political opponents so that at every election, you are returned to power on Nomination Day itself, there being too few opposition candidates who dare contest. To ensure judges convict and find for your lawsuits, sack some like former Justice Michael KHOO. Also promote some like retired Justice Sinnathuray all the way to the Supreme Court for verdicting what you want. Promote to Chief Justice, CHAN Sek Keong when, as AG, he ridiculously refused to prosecute your son then-DPM LEE Hsien Loong together with PM GOH Chok Tong, DPM Tony TAN and PAP MP S VASOO for breaking your own law on illegal entry into polling stations as unauthorised persons.
11. Refuse to hold official commissions of inquiry when caught accepting illegal 15% discounts on purchases of luxury condos, totalling >S$1m in all for the famiLEE. Instead, hold a fake 'hearing' in Parliament and start by threatening the 2 Opposition MPs that you will sue if they dare say anything, so they kept quiet throughout. Then have every word and image airbrushed to appear innocent, cleared and angelic, by your tightly controlled media.
12. With your billions and billions, spend enough to make your little islet clean and green, very cheaply using huge hordes of cheap foreign workers, who live in exploited wretched conditions with squat toilet holes overflowing with faeces, living quarters so cramped they often catch diseases from one another such as chicken pox, etc, living in modified ship containers in secluded forest so the world cannot see the wretchedness. Spend enough on public buildings to look First World.
13. But the key to looking First World is luring the >26,000 foreign companies to locate in Singapore. This is done by giving generous incentives such as tax holidays, grants and free monies -- for example, the ~half dozen pills factories got billions in incentives. Never mind if you lose money on luring these >26,000 foreign companies, and never make money from them, they make your little islet look like the Hubs which you constantly boast of, a Hub of Hubs, etc. They are important because they do things your small little domestic rubber-slippers and plastic-pails-making companies cannot even begin to do and can never master the kind of skills needed for these truly First World foreign companies. These >26,000 foreign companies are what truly make your little islet First World. The Singaporeans they employ get good wages and learn First World skills and do First World kind of work in First World swank offices, gleaming office towers and modern factories. So, these >26,000 foreign companies are the key reasons you look First World, not anything local which you have, which are pathetically Second World at best.
14. To sum up, the real money is obtained by screwing the people, from the CPF-HDB nexus, which billions are what you see in the GIC which you make sure you and your son control. These hundreds of billions, together with more hundreds of billions in Temasek Holdings, which your daughter in law controls, give the impression of success. After all, what bigger symbol of success and First Worldness than billions? But these are all borrowed billions, which, when the tide turns and all the Bubbles burst, will have to be returned to the people one way or another, unless you let them starve and sleep in the streets. The other major component of First Worldness are the >26,000 foreign companies, lured here at great losses and expense, but which Look Good. Yes, if you use every dirty trick in the book to Look Good, you do succeed. At least, for some time until someone comes along and exposes your Secret.

Note 2 [29 Oct 2010]: 70% of Singapore's economy is made up by government monopolies or Govt Linked Companies [GLCs]. These rapacious govt monopolies raise prices every year, for example, the bus monopoly raised bus fares 7 times in 8 years. Since the increased prices = increased 'economic' activity = increase in GDP, at least 3-4% of Singapore's annual GDP 'growth' is thus assured. The rest of GDP growth is produced by the mostly MNCs and some local companies. THESE THUS BECOME DISPROPORTIONATELY HUGE 'SWING FACTORS'. This is why whenever a couple of pills factories close for their regular cleanings, the GDP fluctuates violently, due to their being Swing Factors to the steady, assured 3-4% GDP 'growth' that comes from GLCs raising prices every year. The people are too cowed to protest or complain. This is also why the nepot famiLEE of LIE KY, 2A1B and WKS and their fellow robbers, give themselves millions in 'GDP bonuses' according to a secret formula, rewarding themselves for any GDP growth, which, as I have explained, are practically assured to the tune of 3-4% annually, simply by the GLC monopolies constantly raising prices. Thus, LIE KY pays himself >half a million dollars a MONTH, and even more for GDP 'growth'!
